Artist Statement- Visionary Art

Touch Drawing and Beyond Art Show in Portland, Maine.

Touch Drawing and Beyond Art Show in Portland, Maine. Debra was one of three organizers of the first group show of Touch Drawings in the country.

My art comes thru me as a form of meditation, each piece representing a brief moment in the infinite flow of the Creative Source.  When I sit down to Touch Draw or paint, I have no idea what image will some.  Sometimes it will take days or weeks for the image to fully reveal itself to me.

My art (especially the raw Touch Drawings ™), invites the viewer to engage with images and energy of each piece in their own way.  It’s not unusual for people to “see” different things in my work – shapes and forms that I had not seen or intended, but that is part of the joy of my creative process. I hope my art will touch that deep place of remembering our sacred connection to all creation, helping to heal the divide between ourselves, spirit and nature.

To create a Touch Drawing, I use my bare hands and fingers as tools of expression.  The first impressions on the paper are cast with the eyes closed, in a centered state, by-passing the ego/mind.  What unfolds are often playful, soulful, and magical archetypal images of nature, the goddess, spirit beings and animals – powerful expressions of the inner self and the Creator Self.

I began working on Star Gazer ©2009 while living in Santa Fe and finished the piece just in time for a local art show in West Buxton, Maine.

I am often amazed by the images that have “appeared” on my board without conscious intent – and some of these are included in the Touch Drawing gallery.  Many of these are “raw” touch drawings, others I have “enhanced” with water colors, pastels or mixed media.  My shamanic paintings come thru in a similar way – often the entire under drawing will come through in the matter of minutes….and then it may take many weeks to complete the painting.

My work is definitely sourced from Spirit and influenced by my connection to shamanic and other earth honoring traditions which embrace the sacred feminine.  I am profoundly grateful to have the opportunity to express and share these works with you.  Prints and some originals are available for purchase through the on-line gallery, which will continue to have new works added or older works removed.

I want to acknowledge The Center for Touch Drawing, and Deborah Koff-Chapin for her extraordinary generosity in sharing the Touch Drawing process, and related resources with the world.  Deborah’s Touch Drawings and the Center, have brought the beauty, power and healing found in this process to thousands of individuals around the world.  Please look for the Center’s web site on my Links section.
